This artist uses X-rays to capture every day items as you've never seen them before

Revealing X-ray art made in a lead-lined chamber in the countryside is set to go on show in Leeds this week.

British artist Nick Veasey, takes ordinary items and uses industrial and medical radiography machines to create art that 'strips away the layers of everyday life'.

Teddy bears, flowers and pieces of clothing all feature in his works, as well as larger items like cars and motorbikes.

To create the X-ray of the VW Beetle, he had to dismantle the entire vehicle and X-ray each part individually.

His art can already be seen at major venues including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Francisco and the Science and Technology Museum, Milan.

And this Friday, Veasey will make his debut at Castle Fine Art Galleries in Leeds, with a collection forming part of the Albion Place gallery's permanent displays.

He said: "I like showing the insides of things and how they work. X-ray is a discovery; it’s like a forensic investigation into the subject, showing what it’s really made of.

"We live in a world obsessed with image…what we look like, what our clothes look like, houses, cars. I like to counter this obsession with superficial appearances by using X-rays to strip back the layers and show what it is like under the surface."

Paul Watson, of Castle Fine Art, said Nick's work was 'unlike anything we have exhibited before'.

He said: "Many of Nick’s pieces have taken months and months of work to produce. The VW Beetle, for example, saw him dismantle the whole vehicle, X-raying every single component individually.

"This level of skill and detail cannot properly translate on screen, so we’d urge people to visit the gallery and view the works in person to fully appreciate them."
