Water — we’ve all gotta drink it. And most of us have an emotional support water bottle we carry around with us everywhere; meetings, the gym, the shops, etc. My drinking glasses are basically gathering dust in the cupboard, I hardly use them. Except there’s one aspect I despise when it comes to water bottles: cleaning them.
I’m a busy (and lazy) gal, and I’m embarrassed to admit how infrequently I clean my water bottles. It’s definitely not once a week, or even once a fortnight, that’s for sure. I know, it’s pretty gross, but how on earth do you even get truly in there, like, sponge to the bottom of the bottle in there, and give it a solid wash? Unless I can physically see the grime from my lip gloss leftovers forming on my straw, I’m sipping on bacteria ignorantly. And hey, ignorance is bliss, right?

This probably (definitely) isn’t great for me. So, my ears pricked up when I heard about a new brand called Cleankind.
What is Cleankind?
Cleankind is a cleaning brand designed to simplify the process of washing your water bottles, coffee cups, tumblers, or whatever else you use to drink out of. It’s a 100 per cent natural, non-toxic cleaning powder designed to keep your water bottle mould, grime and bacteria free.
There are a few different Cleankind products: a Starter Bundle ($51.95) if you’re completely new to it, which comes with a 500g powder, a storage container, and a scoop. Or, if you’d rather sachets you can take with you on the go, they come in packs of five ($9.95) or 10 ($19.95). You can also purchase the powder on its own ($39.95) for when you need a refill.
If it means I’m more likely to clean my water bottle minus all the steps, you best believe I’ll give it a red hot crack.
How Does Cleankind Work?

Cleankind is supposed to be a foolproof way of cleaning your water bottle, which is exactly what I need. All you do is put a teaspoon of the powder in your water bottle, fill it with hot tap water, give it a good shake and let it soak for one minute before rinsing.
After that, you’re ready to refill your water bottle and enjoy!
Trying The Cleankind Starter Kit

I got my new water bottle, the Keep Cup Ora, a couple weeks ago, and I can tell you that it most definitely hasn’t been cleaned since I started using it. So, after emptying the Cleankind powder into its storage container, I got a teaspoon, popped the cleaning solution into my water bottle, and filled it with hot tap water.
After shaking it for around 20 seconds, when I opened up the lid, I could hear the fizz settling. There was also soap foam on the inside of my lid. Since the powder does fizz up, and I wasn’t very cautious when opening my bottle, a bit of water splashed onto my kitchen counter. Nothing to complain about, but be mindful when opening it up if your water bottle has a snap lid or straw!

I left it to soak while I made my morning coffee, and when I came back to it and took off the lid to rinse it, inside my bottle was bubbles galore. The powder had soaped up while I was shaking my bottle. However, I couldn’t smell a detergent scent. My bottle looked clean enough, but TBH, it’s not like I can see the germs or grime most of the time, so it’s not really possible to tell a visual difference.
Now, onto Cleankind’s make or break: the sip test. I HATE drinking from my bottle after cleaning it, because there’s always a residual soap taste on the straw for the first three or four times I refill my water bottle. No matter how much you rinse it, it won’t go away.
But Cleankind? There was nothing; just the crisp taste of my cold water.
I couldn’t believe it. A water bottle cleaner that doesn’t leave your straw tasting like the detergent you used to clean it? Groundbreaking stuff.
Cleankind: The Verdict
Cleankind is a lazy person’s dream. And it might just be the hack I need to become a hygienic water bottle user.
Now I know this product exists, I have zero excuses to be gross about my drinking habits. It takes less than two minutes, doesn’t leave an after taste, and is entirely foolproof to use. I couldn’t come up with a flaw if I tried.
