Thiruvananthapuram: KTU increases PhD fellowship from 18 to 100

THIRUVANANAHTAPURAM: APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University has resolved to make a phenomenal increase in the number of PhD fellowships from next year admission.

The University Syndicate has decided to increase the number of fellowships to 100 from the current 18. The fellowship carries a monthly research grant of Rs 25,000 and annual contingency of Rs 20,000 for three years.

"The grant will encourage more students to take up research under the university. This fellowship will be a boon for those students who cannot pursue research due to financial difficulties," said vice-chancellor MS Rajasree.

The fellowship will be awarded to meritorious students of the programme based on their performance in the PhD entrance and the subsequent interview. The university, every year, conducts discipline-centric PhD entrance examinations.

Last year more than 1,500 students applied for PhD, of which 1,200 appeared for examinations. So far, the university has given fellowships to 89 researchers. A total of 994 research students are pursuing their studies in 40 research centres spanning across Kerala.
