Thirumavalavan demands all-party meet on NEP

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi president and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan on Thursday urged the State government to reject the new education policy (NEP). He exhorted Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to call for an all-party meeting to express the State’s opposition to the Centre’s new policy.

In a statement, he said the Centre had announced the policy which took away the autonomy of States and attempted to give a saffron tinge to education, that too at the time of a pandemic. “It must be rejected,” he said.

The policy did not mention about providing education for all and the three-language policy would impose Hindi and Sanskrit, which was not acceptable and it would not find support with people of Tamil Nadu. The New Education Policy was an attempt by the Centre to take control of the higher education. The mandatory entrance examinations prescribed for college and university admission would deprive opportunity for many, he alleged.

The policy had been announced without any debate in Parliament and without seeking opinion of the State governments. “This is anti-people and against the principles of democracy,” Mr. Thirumavalavan added.
