Thirteen mile queues on M4 and gridlocked roads all around after dramatic lorry fire

Part of the M4 remains closed after a lorry fire and traffic has been at a standstill for hours in Newport and surrounding areas.

The HGV was on fire on the eastbound carriageway between junction 28 for the A48 Tredegar Park to junction 26 Malpas at around 3.53pm today.

The eastbound carriageway has been fully closed since 4pm, causing severe delays.

There is currently congestion to junction 30 Cardiff Gate. Traffic is also queuing back into Cardiff on the A48(M) past St Mellons.

Traffic in Newport is almost at a standstill as vehicles are diverted via the A48 Southern Distributor Road before rejoining at junction 24.

Trapped traffic is once again being released onto lane one (of two) on the exit slip, while recovery work taked place at the scene.

There are also severe delays for those travelling westbound, with queueing traffic for 13 miles.

On this route, all lanes reopened at 5.15pm, but there is congestion from Cardiff to Prince of Wales Bridge. Currently, an extra 40 minutes will be added onto westbound journeys.
