Third student at Bristol secondary school tests positive for covid

A third student has tested positive for coronavirus at a large Bristol secondary school.

Leaders at Bedminster Down confirmed today (March 25) that another student has tested positive for the virus using a rapid lateral flow test. The result will now be confirmed by a PCR test.

The student in question is currently at home in self-isolation, it is not known what year group the affected student is in.

The school is now awaiting the results of the PCR test before advising other students who are deemed as close contacts of the individual to self-isolate.

There have already been two positive cases of coronavirus at the school since it re-opened its doors on March 8, one positive case in year seven and another in year 11, with a number of students now in self-isolation.

The school, part of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, is working with Public Health England.

A spokesman for the school said: “Bedminster Down School has today been notified that a student is isolating after testing positive for Covid-19 using a rapid lateral flow device.

“In line with guidance from Public Health England, if this result is confirmed by a PCR test, other students may be identified as also needing to isolate.

“Since schools re-opened on March 8, Bedminster Down School has had two students who tested positive on a confirmatory PCR test, which did lead to a number of close contacts needing to isolate and switch to remote learning.

“BDS continues to make every effort to keep students and staff safe.”
