Third person bitten by shark within 24 hours at New Smyrna Beach, officials say

ORLANDO, Fla. _ A man from Nashville became the third person bitten by a shark this weekend at New Smyrna Beach, officials said.

The unidentified man, who is in his early 50s, was standing in knee-deep water shortly before 3 p.m. on Sunday when the shark bit his right foot, according to Capt. Mike Berard with Volusia County Beach Safety.

The man refused to be taken to the hospital so he was treated for "minor lacerations" with a bandage and dressing, Berard said.

On Saturday, two surfers were bitten within minutes of each other near the Inlet at New Smyrna. A 20-year-old woman was bitten on her left hand and wrist and a 21-year-old man was bitten on his right foot.

Beach officials flew the red flag Sunday indicating high surf and a strong current in addition to the purple flag, which warns of dangerous marine life.

Lifeguards rescued 16 people out of the ocean without further incident.
