Third of North Lanarkshire coronavirus deaths in past week occur in care homes

There were 15 coronavirus deaths in North Lanarkshire in the past week.

The deaths last week where COVID-19 was listed on the death certificate included five in the region’s care homes.

In neighbouring South Lanarkshire, deaths in care homes (eight) represented just a quarter of deaths from coronavirus, compared with almost 60 per cent (22) in the previous week.

The updated official figures, released by the National Records of Scotland, takes the total number of coronavirus deaths in Lanarkshire to 436.

Lanarkshire as a whole remains the second-worst affected health board in Scotland with 6.6 deaths for every 10,000 people, only Greater Glasgow and Clyde has seen a higher death rate (8.8).

Only Lothian (551) and Greater Glasgow and Clyde (1,038) have seen a higher number of coronavirus deaths than Lanarkshire although the death rate in Lothian is only 6.1 because of the bigger population.
