France's western city of Nantes has seen a third night of tensions, with dozens of cars and buildings set alight to protest a fatal police shooting of a driver who was apparently trying to avoid an identity check.
No clashes, however, between police and protesters were reported overnight, unlike previous nights.
Fifty-two cars were torched overnight in Nantes, including the mayor's personal vehicle, and eight buildings were damaged by fire or vandalism, including a bar in a shopping center which was destroyed by arson, officials said.
On Thursday evening, hundreds of people marched silently to protest the death of the 22-year-old driver. His shooting sparked two nights of violence, with protesters clashing with riot police, burning cars and stores.
Authorities say the driver, who died from a single bullet wound, had been sought by police under a year-old arrest warrant for an alleged robbery.
An officer has been detained for questioning over the killing of the man identified by media as Aboubakar F.
There have been more than a dozen arrests over the riots, including one in the Paris suburb of Garges-les-Gonesse where the slain man grew up, after youths threw Molotov cocktails at police and set dumpsters alight early Thursday.
