Third night of mystery fireworks in Bristol city centre

Fireworks celebrations continued for the third night running in Castle Park last night.

The mystery pyrotechnics displays, which begin at around 9.30pm each night with a repeat after midnight, have been baffling and delighting local residents in equal measure.

It is not known exactly what's behind the extravagant displays, but members of Bristol's Chinese community celebrating New Year is thought to be the reason for the celebrations.

The fireworks displays began on Thursday night, and continued after midnight, and were repeated again on Friday night with another late night display too.

That one woke many in and around the city centre, include TV and radio presenter Carol Vorderman.

And after Bristol Live first reported on the phenomenon on Saturday, the city centre was treated to a fifth display in three nights, again in Castle Park at around 9.40pm on Saturday night.

That was again captured on film by Steven Watson from his flat overlooking the city centre.

One local resident of Wapping Wharf said they were at first mystified by the first fireworks display on Thursday night, until speculation on social media mentioned Chinese New Year as a likely reason for the celebration.

“I was watching TV on Thursday night when the first fireworks went off,” said one resident of Wapping Wharf.

“I didn’t know of any celebrations going on at the time, but you do hear fireworks occasionally where I live so it didn’t bother me, although it was a bit tiresome when they started up again past midnight.

“The first round lasted about five minutes at around 9.40pm on Thursday. Then we heard them start up again on Friday night, and they were unusually loud, to be honest,” she added.
