The third instalment of Manchester's popular Melanin Markets will be aimed at highlighting 'black boy joy' by showcasing businesses owned by black men. Known as the 'King Edition' of the markets, the event will be taking over the ground floor of the Home theatre, filling the venue with music, food, drink, art, homeware and clothing.
Melanin Markets Manchester was created by professional arts sector workers, Bianca Danielle and Kelly Morgan. They both feel passionately that art and culture is for everyone regardless of class, age or race, so they have created Melanin Markets as a way to actively engage with their community and bring them into the centre of these spaces, hoping to break down barriers.
Speaking on the message behind the market set to take place on Sunday (October 9) co-founder Kelly Morgan said: "We feel like black men don't get the best representation in the media. There's lots of trauma and anger surrounding the narrative that the media portray black men with.
"We wanted to have this event as a way for black men to have their own voice and give their own narrative in kind of a black boy joy way so it's not all doom and gloom. It's about showing the dynamic variety that black men have."
Melanin Markets began with a successful debut Christmas themed event last year at the Contact Theatre, and followed it up with a takeover at the Royal Exchange theatre in May.
This special edition will showcase over 30 businesses led by Black men, creating space for Black men to showcase the range of business, interests and narratives they hold.
The team have partnered up with Manchester music scene legend Abnormal Sleepz, who has curated a number of sessions that will feature intimate performances from black musicians in Manchester and conversations about what it means to be black, Manc and male.
The event will take place for free on Sunday (October 9) at Home on Tony Wilson Place in Manchester. Everyone is welcome and there is no need to book tickets.
