Third man pleads guilty to manslaughter over bashing that left man dead on doorstep

All three men charged over a bashing that killed Canberra man Bobby Allan in 2017 have now pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Graeme Jarrett Vickerstaff, 47, was initially charged with murder, along with Colin Maxwell Booth, 35, and Dean Phillip Welsh, 50.

The other two defendants entered guilty pleas to manslaughter over the past fortnight.

Mr Allan, 48, was found dead in front of his neighbour's house in the suburb of Rivett, days before Christmas in 2017, after being beaten with a baseball bat.

A post-mortem later found the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

In the ACT Supreme Court today, Vickerstaff, after taking instructions from his solicitor, became the third man to plead guilty to manslaughter over Mr Allan's death.

His plea, along with the two other defendants' pleas, means a lengthy trial scheduled to begin this month will no longer take place.

A statement of facts tendered to the court said Mr Allan had been selling the drug ice to Vickerstaff for about 18 months before the killing. Vickerstaff, a mechanic, had also helped Mr Allan fix motorcycles they owned.

The statement said Vickerstaff and his associates believed Mr Allan had amassed a large stash of cash and drugs at his home. Vickerstaff also believed his girlfriend had been intimately involved with Mr Allan.

The trio allegedly drove to Mr Allan's house in the early hours of December 17, 2017, where, the statement said, Vickerstaff sprayed Mr Allan in the face with engine degreaser when he answered the door and struck him with the bat.

Mr Allan then fled next door while the men allegedly ransacked his home and stole his belongings, including a phone and his bank cards. He was found dead about 5:30am.

According to the documents, Booth and Welsh, still covered in blood, used some of the money they stole to buy alcohol and a meal at a McDonald's restaurant.

In court today, Justice David Mossop ordered that a pre-sentence report be prepared Vickerstaff. His sentence hearing will take place in December.

However, the court heard that he may dispute some of the tendered facts before then.
