Third man charged over Sydney shooting

A third man has been charged in relation to a shooting in southwest Sydney following NSW Police's crackdown on "wannabe gangsters and career criminals".

Police arrested Hamza Khan, 25, Thursday morning after he was found hiding in a laundry at a home in Marrickville.

The Lakemba man was charged with shooting with intent to murder and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Police allege Hamza Khan was involved in a shooting at Lakemba in August, where a 29-year-old man was found with five gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen.

Bilal Haider Khan, 22, and Ayman El-Sankari, 23, were both arrested in Bankstown in September over their alleged roles in the Lakemba shooting.

Bilal Khan was charged with intent to murder, possessing an unregistered firearm in a public place, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

El-Sankari was charged with shooting with intent to murder, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and breach of bail.

They were both refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court in November.

Police earlier said at least 12 shootings, including five in public places, have been reported in southwest Sydney since the beginning of August.

NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said protecting members of the community was a priority.

"Those wannabe gangsters or even career criminals who want to commit violence in public places ... we will come down on them very swiftly and very firmly," he told reporters in September.

"Every single shooting is being thoroughly investigated. We understand the seriousness of these matters and we will leave no stone unturned."

Hamza Khan faced a magistrate on Friday at Newtown Local Court, where he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

He will next face Bankstown Local Court on November 11.
