Third man charged over NSW ute shooting

Police found the body of David King, 45, in the driver's seat of a ute in the NSW Hunter region. (AAP)

A third man has been charged with a shooting murder in the NSW Hunter region earlier this year.

Police found 45-year-old David King's body in the driver's seat of a white ute on Hideaway Drive in Port Stephens in August after receiving calls that the car had hit a tree.

Two men aged 27 and 39 were last week charged over Mr King's murder.

Now a 26-year-old is also facing a murder charge, as well as aggravated sex assault, kidnapping and a gun charge.

The man was arrested at 9am on Friday at Grafton Police Station.

Police will argue the men shot Mr King, then fled the scene in a white Santa Fe, which was later found burnt out in Heatherbrae.

They allege the 26-year-old sexually assaulted a woman in the car, before setting it on fire.

Police believe the shooting was a targeted attack.

The man was refused bail in Grafton Local Court on Friday. He is due to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on December 20.
