A third man has been arrested and questioned in connection to a violent assault in Ballyphehane in Cork.

Gardai in Togher arrested the man as part of their investigation into an assault on a man at Pearse Square in Ballyphehane on April 7.

Two gangs armed with bats and knives clashed at Pearse Square last Monday night, CorkBeo reports.

One man, in his early 20s, was rushed to Cork University Hospital with serious stab wounds and underwent surgery the next morning.

A garda spokesperson said: "The man (late 40s) was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Togher Garda Station.

"He was questioned in relation to the incident and has since been released without charge this evening, Sunday April 12, 2020 and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions."

This is the third arrest as part of this investigation and investigations are ongoing.
