Third man arrested following brutal group attack leaving pensioner with serious head injuries in Dublin

A third man has been arrested following a violent assault which left a man aged in his late 60s with serious head injuries.

The innocent victim was set upon following a "verbal altercation" on Monday night before he was assaulted on Fairview Strand in Dublin.

Investigators probing the assault on the man made two arrests - one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday morning who have both since been released.

A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

However gardai confirmed a third man had been arrested on Wednesday evening in connection with the incident.

He was last night being detained at Clontarf Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The Irish Mirror previously learned there were at least two more who are wanted for questioning and detectives are hoping to identify them over the incident.

A source said: "This was a shocking assault on a man who was attacked by a number of people who were in a group together.

"Two men have been arrested but gardai are looking to identify others who may have been involved."

A witness who saw the attack told gardai that the victim got at least one kick to the head.

But officers suspect the man, who was left unconscious, suffered more blows judging by his injuries.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them at Raheny Garda Station on 01 666 4300 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
