UK hit by third heatwave as temperatures set to reach up to 35C

  • The UK has entered its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 35C in some areas later this week, according to the Met Office .
  • South east England has already met heatwave criteria, experiencing three consecutive days above 28C.
  • Amber heat health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for the Midlands, east, south east and south west of England, which are now in force until 9pm on Sunday.
  • Yellow heat health alerts have been issued for Yorkshire and northern England during the same period, with the Met Office warning of “tropical nights” later this week, where temperatures will not drop below 20C.
  • The Met Office’s deputy chief forecaster, Steven Keates, said: “Temperatures this week are not expected to reach the highs we witnessed last month, though parts of southern England in particular are likely to see several days in the low 30s, and a few places could reach 34-35C later this week.”
