Third Covid jab for under 50s in England set to be announced today

People under 50 in England are to be invited to have a third covid jab to boost immunity and prevent a major surge in cases of Covid-19 this winter according to reports.

The UK Government is expected to announce the move today, according to The Times.

Those over 50 have already been offered a third jab, a booster, after it was found that immunity from the first two jabs had waned.

The jab will be available to anyone who had their second dose of a vaccine six months ago or more - which will mostly be people in their late 40s.

12.6million over 50s have so far had a third dose.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is expected to give its approval to third jabs for under-50s today.

It comes as research shows that protection offered by two doses of a Covid vaccine among older people drops by a third after six months, and a third dose pushes it back over 95 per cent.

Professor David Strain of the University of Exeter said: “We are seeing hospitalisations in people in their 40s and 50s who are double vaccinated.
