Third coronavirus case confirmed in NHS Lothian as Nicola Sturgeon says increase may be 'rapid'

A third person in the NHS Lothian area has tested positive for coronavirus, with the Scottish total now standing at 18.

The Scottish Government announced 18 positive cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed as of Sunday, March 8. Just under 2,000 people have been tested for the virus.

On Saturday, the number of coronavirus cases north of the border stood at 16, including two in Fife.

The latest figures come as the First Minister says there could be a "rapid" increase in the number of confirmed cases in the coming days.

Speaking to the BBC's Politics Scotland on Sunday, Nicola Sturgeon said the Scottish Government would have to make "difficult judgements" about how to tackle the virus.

The First Minister, who was part of an earlier Cobra meeting to discuss the UK's response to coronavirus, said the figure was likely to go up further.

She said: "I expect it to rise today. I expect to see it rise perhaps rapidly in the days to come.

"It is now very likely that we are facing a significant outbreak of coronavirus across the UK and we're preparing for that.

"Because what is not inevitable is the scale of that impact."

The NHS' capacity to treat people with the virus would be increased, she said, though the vast majority of people who contract Covid-19 will not need hospital treatment.

Scotland's chief medic has said that only 20% of those infected are likely to fall ill.

A further Cobra meeting willtake place on Monday, where ministers around the UK will discuss moving from the "contain" phase to the "delay" phase.

She said there were "quite difficult" decisions to be made, but as yet no decision had been made on closing schools in Scotland.

The UK has seen 273 cases of coronavirus confirmed. It has killed more than 3,400 people worldwide.

While the latest case has been confirmed in the NHS Lothian area, the Scottish Government does not provide details on what part of the health board's territory the patient is in.

Earlier, a "drive-thru" style testing facility was set up at the Western General hospital in Edinburgh.

Available by appointment only, patients can drive up and see a medical professional without leaving their car.

A swab is taken from their mouth and sent away for testing.

Common symptoms of coronavirus include:
• high temperature or fever
• cough
• shortness of breath
