Third case of Coronavirus confirmed in UK

A third case of Coronavirus in the UK has been confirmed by the Department of Health.

It is not yet known where the person is being treated, although it is believed they did not contract the virus in the UK.

The first two UK cases were confirmed at the end of January.

The Chinese student from York University and his mother are still being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary infectious diseases centre in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty said: "The patient is being transferred to a specialist NHS centre, and we are using robust infection control measures to prevent any possible further spread of the virus.

"The NHS is well prepared to manage these cases and we are now working quickly to identify any contacts the patient has had."

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include fever and cough that can progress to severe pneumonia. This can cause shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

The virus causes more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems , older people and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

A detailed analysis in China revealed all 99 of the first patients had developed pneumonia - where their lungs became inflamed and the sacs where oxygen moves from the air to the blood were filling with water.
