Third Bristol coronavirus death confirmed in one week

A patient has died at a Bristol hospital after contracting coronavirus - the third death in our city in one week.

The latest death was at University Hospitals Bristol, which runs Bristol Royal Infirmary, on October 18 - more than three months after the last death at the trust on July 10.

On Friday (October 16), two deaths were confirmed at North Bristol Trust, which happened on October 11 and 12.

Cases across Bristol have been soaring in recent weeks, and now deaths in the city are also rising.

Overall, there has been 276 Covid-related deaths at Bristol hospitals since March.

And active coronavirus cases are estimated to have risen by more than 1,200 in Bristol and South Gloucestershire over the last week.

The Covid Symptom Study is an app which tracks people with symptoms across the country and gives an estimate for the number of people with the virus on a given day.

Its data, from King's College London, indicates Bristol has jumped from 1,688 symptomatic cases on October 14, to 2,314 today (October 21).

The suggested rise of 626 active cases is based on the app's latest estimate of 5,031 active cases per million people in Bristol – up from 3,671 per million.

For the first time, Bristol's rate per million is believed to be above 5,000 – putting it in the worst-hit tier on the heat map.

Government figures released on Tuesday (October 20) show Bristol has now had 3,822 people test positive for the virus since March.
