The confirmation comes after the bodies of two other men were found dead in this stretch of the canal near Leigh Street, Wigan.

Mikey Greenall, 27, fell in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, near lock 77, on the evening of September 18, 2020.

Bolton Coroner's Court heard he had been on a night out with childhood sweetheart and mother to his two children, Alex Ince.

Police found his body in the canal on September 23.

Senior coroner for Manchester West, Timothy Brennand expressed concern over the stretch of canal after another man, Matt Dutton, drowned four weeks earlier.

The 22-year-old apprentice plumber from Wigan drowned after an evening drinking alcohol and taking ketamine, an inquest heard.

Matt Dutton's death, like Mr Greenall's was recorded as an accident.

Mr Brennand told Bolton Coroner's Court during Mr Greenall's inquest that he would write a "letter of concern'" to the Canal and River Trust and Wigan Council.

He said: "What I can do is to write to the Canal and River Trust and Wigan Council to make clear that I have matters of concern in relation to the issue of the fact that within the period of canal between lock 77 and lock 79, this is the second tragedy to have befallen local residents in that area.

"Open stretches of water can kill. I will write with immediate effect to the two agencies I have indicated and within the context of my letter I will express my own concerns with the issue of water safety."

Confirming a body was found on Monday, a GMP spokesman said: "At around 4.45pm on Monday 1 March 2021, officers were called to a report of a body found in the Canal near Leigh Street, Wigan.

"Emergency services attended and sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene."

Police said that there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.
