Third body found in Wigan canal in just over six months days after coroner raised safety concerns

Police have found the body of a 47-year-old man in a Wigan canal.

Officers confirmed that they discovered the body on Monday afternoon (March 1).

It is the third time in the space of just over six months that a man has drowned in that particular stretch of water in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Last week, during an inquest into the death of beloved father-of-two Mikey Greenall, senior coroner Timothy Brennand told Bolton Coroner's Court that he would write a 'letter of concern' following the death, and that of 22-year-old Matt Dutton, a month earlier.

He said: "What I can do is to write to the Canal and River Trust and Wigan Council to make clear that I have matters of concern in relation to the issue of the fact that within the period of canal between lock 77 and lock 79, this is the second tragedy to have befallen local residents in that area.

During Mikey Greenall's inquest, senior coroner Timothy Brennand raised concerns about safety at the canal (Family handout)

"Open stretches of water can kill. I will write with immediate effect to the two agencies I have indicated and within the context of my letter I will express my own concerns with the issue of water safety."

Police said that the most recent body was discovered near Leigh Road, which is closest to lock 83 on the canal, just a short walk from where Mr Dutton and Mr Greenall were found.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said that there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

A GMP spokesman said: "At around 4.45pm on Monday 1 March 2021, officers were called to a report of a body found in the Canal near Leigh Street, Wigan.

"Emergency services attended and sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances and report is being prepared for the Coroner."

A petition has been set up to try and get barriers or lighting put up along the canal.
