Things we could do in ‘00s Glasgow that we can’t do anymore

There’s a huge array of things to do in Glasgow, from fabulous clubs to great restaurants, but we’ve had to say goodbye to many over the years.

As the saying goes - you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, which certainly applies to these spots we took for granted. The ‘00s came to an end 13 years ago, and we’re looking back at some of the great businesses we have bid farewell to.

Check out some of our favourite below and test your memory of ‘00s Glasgow.

A late night trip to Kings Cafe

One of Glasgow’s longest running establishments, Kings Cafe first opened in 1898 and lasted all the way up until 2015.

In its later years, it catered to late night clubbers and an endless queue of students. Serving up the Scottish delicacy of the deep-fried Mars Bar, it was an institution.

Saturday nights haven’t been the same since we lost this Glasgow spot.

Dancing at The Arches

We lost this popular spot back in 2015, The Arches was one of Glasgow’s most popular nighttime spots.

Throughout the ‘90s and into the ‘00s, it was the place to be for any rave fan. Slam on Fridays, Colour on Saturdays, your weekend was sorted.

We’ve never quite recovered from this loss.

Party at Little Marcos

Housed in Templeton Business Centre, Little Marcos might have been chaotic - but it was great.

It may not have been so fun for grown ups, but it was an absolute must for any kid birthday party back in the day. Owned by the Demarco family, the spot sadly closed in 2008.

Pizza at Paperino’s

With restaurants across Glasgow, Paperino’s was a name we came to know very well throughout the ‘90s and ‘00s.

From prosecco on tap, to endless choices of pizza and pasta, this spot was a favourite for those on a budget. The last venue to close was their Byres Road spot in 2015, replaced by a giant pizza chain.

It kept us going through the ‘00s, and we’ll be forever thankful.

Enjoy a pint at Frankenstein

A huge city centre favourite, this unique pub had three floors each with their own bar.

In the evenings, the venue transformed into a party space with Rocky Horror nights and Karaoke Sundays. Offering £3.95 cocktails during the week, we can understand how this spot was popular.

A night at Archaos

Before it closed in 2007, you probably would’ve followed up a trip to Archaos with a bite from Kings Cafe.

Once one of the hottest clubs in Glasgow, this venue saw ‘regular’ folks mingle with celebs and footballers. Even the most hammered among us were likely to get in.

The Queen Street club was spread over three levels, known for their s**g tag nights where students wore numbered tags and wrote messages of interest on a giant board.

Sorely missed.

Browse the collection at Flip Clothing

For nearly three decades, Flip Clothing was the place to shop for any trendy teen.

501s, retro bowling shirts and anything vintage could be found in these walls. Affordable, staple pieces of clothing could be found for any hard-up student.

Initially in Wilson Street, it moved to bigger premises in Queen Street before closing for good in 2007.

Shopping at Tower Records

Those around in the ‘00s just caught this one for a short time, as it closed back in 2002.

One of the most popular record stores in the city, this huge venue was where many spend Saturday afternoons flicking through the latest releases. Unfortunately, those days are long gone.
