Things to do with the kids in and around Manchester this weekend

The weekend is here again and as we head into December it can mean only one thing, Christmas is coming.

And there are plenty of events happening to get you all in the festive spirit.

Whether you're planning to head along to one of the many grottos , fancy your chances at ice skating , or want to take in a Christmas show or pantomime , the opportunities are endless.

And if you can't face the thought of Christmas just yet, then you could escape from it all with the superheroes at , which is on at Manchester Arena this weekend.

Here's what else is happening in and around Greater Manchester this Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1 ...

Santa Train, The Rock, Bury

The festive land train is back in Bury this weekend and kids can ride it for free.

From this Saturday it'll be providing free transport between Peel Monument (by the church) and St John’s Square (opposite Costa at The Rock), everyday between 10am and 4pm until December 31, closing only on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Although the service is free organisers will be accepting donations for Bury Hospice.

You could also visit the town's new traditional themed Santa's grotto while you're there.

It opened last week following Santa's parade, is free to visit and children get a chocolate lolly to take home.

Marvel Universe Live, Manchester Arena

Marvel fans are in for a treat at Manchester Arena this weekend as the Marvel Universe Live tour continues.

It's the final two days to catch the show, which brings more than 25 of the characters to life in a live action-packed performance.

Marvel's mightiest heroes face off against some of the most threatening villains in the Marvel Universe including Loki, Nebula, Yondu, Green Goblin, Electro, Rhino, Black Cat and more.

The show features cutting-edge special effects, 3D video projection mapping, aerial stunts, martial arts and pyrotechnics.

There are performances at 11am, 3pm and 7pm this Saturday and 11am and 3pm on Sunday.

Frozen Spectacular and Christmas lights, Ashton, Tameside

It's the big lights switch-on in Ashton this Saturday and they'll be lots of festive family fun happening throughout the day.

Ashton Market is hosting a Frozen Spectacular featuring meet and greet characters with photo opportunities, a magical interactive show, special craft making workshop in a Frozen marquee, and entertainment between 11am and 3pm.

The lights switch-on event then runs from 3pm until 6pm.

Whoville Christmas Markets, Salford

There'll be lots of Grinch-themed fun for families down at Salford Quays again this weekend, which is hosting the Whoville-inspired Christmas markets.

The Lowry Outlet events comes as The Lowry theatre prepares for the arrival of Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical .

As well as Whoville-inspired treats at The Makers Markets, including Who Puddings such as Grinch Macaroons, there are lots of activities for little ones to enjoy.

Inside the mall, a special Whoville Post Office has been set up for children to send their letters to Santa.

Elves are on hand to help those little Cindy-Lou Whos decide what to ask Father Christmas for and there are plenty of photo opportunities.

Families can also take part in a Whoville Present Trail to see if they can find the 16 presents stolen by the Grinch and hidden around the mall.

Collect a map and search high and low to find the Whoville residents’ Christmas gifts.

There's something for your little bookworms too, with a Mount Crumpit reading area, open daily between 10am to 4pm, offering books for little Whos who love to read.

The Whoville Christmas Markets will run every weekend until Sunday, December 22.

They'll open from 10am to 7pm on Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.

Tyldesley Christmas lights

The town featuring in this year's will be hosting its own lights switch-on this weekend too.

There'll be festive treats, free brews and more at Tyldesley's Christmas Markets and the lights will be switched on local lad Fin Woodward, this year's Junior Bake Off champion.

The markets open at noon and will feature a variety of stalls, children’s activities and a treasure hunt.

Father Christmas will arrive on his sleigh at 3.30pm, ahead of the big switch-on at 5.30pm on the square opposite the Top Chapel.

Walkden In A Winter Wonderland

There's more festive fun in Walkden town centre, which is launching its Winter Wonderland this weekend.

There'll be entertainment, festive craft stalls, a Santa's Grotto and a Children's Activity Area.

The fun starts at 10am and there'll be a special Greatest Show performance in Victoria Square at noon.

Alpine Village, Trafford Centre

An Alpine Village has arrived at the Trafford Centre with a huge teepee, festive huts and more.

The village first appeared last year and was a big hit with families wanting to get in the Christmas spirit.

This time organisers say it's even better as there's the addition of the Big Wheel.

There are stalls selling food and sweet treats and families can keep warm by the fire pit inside the huge tepee, which will host live music and entertainment.

The Alpine Village is situated outside the Great Hall, where there's a Victorian Carousel and the 55m-high Big Wheel, which offers 'magnificent views of the local area and intu Trafford Centre’s spectacular Christmas lights'.

It opens 10am to 9pm Saturdays and 12pm to 6pm Sundays.

Other festive events and activities include the Peter Rabbit Christmas Grotto and don't forget the Upside Down House is still outside The Orient and has now had a festive makeover of its own.

The topsy-turvy attraction promises visitors 'a zero-gravity illusion experience in a safe and family friendly environment' and visitors are invited to let 'their imagination run riot as they capture the perfect photo'.

On the day tickets cost £5 per person (under threes go free). Advance tickets can be booked online for £3.50 weekdays or £4.50 weekends. Find out more here .
