'Things have got worse' - on the Salford road where a house was shot at

Most of Cholmondeley Road had already headed for bed last night when a bang rang out on the Irlams o' th' Height road.

According to residents, bangs have recently been quite common but are usually just fireworks

However, there was something decidedly more sinister about the one heard yesterday night.

People living in the road said that the shot was fired just after 11pm yesterday (Tuesday March 16) and one woman told the Manchester Evening News that it sounded markedly different than the fireworks heard in recent weeks.

"I heard it," she said.

"A lad took his life recently and they've been letting off fireworks for him but it sounded different because it was just the one bang.

"I didn't come out though. I presumed it was just an air rifle."

Although not too far from the notorious Duchy estate, Cholmondeley Road itself seems friendly.

One neighbour claimed "things have got worse over the past few years".

Another woman, who lives in Cholmondeley Road, thought the noise was a brick being thrown through a car window.

She said: "I heard a bang followed by a noise which I thought was glass breaking, like a brick through a car window or something, it was that sort of noise.

"I came out a bit later to let the dog out for a wee as I was heading to bed but I couldn't really see anything."

Asked whether she was worried, the woman added: "Anything like that’s a worry but I’m sure police will deal with it.

"I would think it’s targeted. Some years ago, a house at the back of me on Hayfield Road was targeted. I woke up in the middle of the night to that as well.

"It's worrying for them though, there's a baby in that house."

Despite the police cordon in place, the bullet hole in the downstairs window of the house was still visible.

An empty shell casing also lay in the middle of the road.

Police say they were called to the incident at 7.40am this morning and they spent less than five hours at the scene in total.

No one was injured in the shooting and no arrests have yet been made.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "There isn’t believed to be a wider threat to the public and it is not believed to be linked to any known ongoing feud.

"No arrests have been made and police patrols will be increased in the area for the rest of the week as reassurance for the community.

They added: "At around 07:40am on Wednesday 17 March 2021, police were called to a report of a firearms discharge on Cholmondeley Road, Salford.

"Officers attended and established that a bullet had been fired at a property.

"No one was injured, but damage was caused to the property.

"No arrests have been made and an investigation is on-going."
