'Things have changed': West Coast skipper steps down

Inaugural West Coast AFLW captain Emma Swanson insists retirement isn't on the cards despite stepping down as skipper following six seasons in the role.

Swanson recently welcomed a baby boy, Joey, with her fiancé Andrea, and is now looking forward to balancing family life with football.

The 30-year-old spent most of her career as a star midfielder, but has embraced a role in defence under coach Daisy Pearce.

Despite giving up the captaincy, retirement isn't on Swanson's mind.

"For the last 12 months I've been thinking about stepping down as skipper," Swanson said.

"I've had some really good conversations with Daisy and Michelle (Cowan) over the last three or four months, and I think the best time is now.

"Things have changed a fair bit for me at home, so that's where my priorities are.

"It's been a hell of a ride and a lot of fun.

"I'm not going anywhere, and probably won't be doing anything differently, other than not flipping the coin (on game day)."

West Coast finished 13th with a 4-7 record under first-year coach Pearce last season - the club's best ever return.

The Eagles began pre-season training on Monday, with round one of the 2025 season scheduled for the week commencing August 11.
