Thieving carer struck off for betraying trust of vulnerable lady and stealing her cash

A greedy care worker stole from a vulnerable woman she was supposed to look after in her own home.

Rachel Kelly, from East Kilbride, has been banned from working in the sector after her appalling behaviour towards the trusting lady.

In a ruling published yesterday, the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) said she had been convicted at Hamilton Sheriff Court of stealing cash from the victim while she was supposed to be looking after her in March last year.

And pointed out: "She was clearly a very vulnerable person. This lady trusted you to enter her home.

"In stealing from her, you abused the trust of the service user and her family.

"The SSSC do not know if the money was taken in one lump sum or over a number of days. However, there is always a risk of repetition with this type of behaviour."

Kelly apologised for her behaviour in an email to the SSSC, however they insist she can't be trusted in a similar position again.

The report goes on: "You have explained you had a lot of troubles in your personal life. You pled guilty to the charge and accepted responsibility.

"The Panel do not have any confirmation that what you told them is true, but even if they take it at face value it does not diminish the seriousness of the crime.

"The Panel cannot be confident that if you were to find yourself in difficult times in the future, you would not do the same again.

"The money should be repaid through the court’s compensation order. But even if it is, it does not remedy the behaviour.

"A service user has suffered financial harm as a result of your behaviour. There remains a real risk that if this behaviour were to be repeated and if it were repeated residents could be placed at serious risk of harm. "
