Thieves who sparked a three-hour roof top standoff after snatching a 10-week-old puppy have been jailed

Thieves who snatched a puppy from its home, climbed onto the roof of a cafe then spent three hours in a standoff with police have been jailed.

Jamie Stanton, Muktahir Rahmen and Christopher Butler, stole the 10-week-old shih tzu during a burglary in Chadderton, Oldham, in June.

But they were spotted by a dog-walker who, thinking they looked suspicious, called police.

He followed them to Freehold Metrolink stop where Stanton, who had the puppy stuffed up his top, Rehamn and Butler, jumped on a tram.

But when Stanton and Butler got off at Oldham Central police officers were waiting for them.

Stanton threw the puppy on the tram lines and the pair ran off along the tracks.

With the police in pursuit the two men ran up an embankment and climbed onto the roof of Koffee Kingdom cafe in Foundary Street where they threatened to 'batter' anyone who followed them up.

A tense three-hour standoff followed, before police negotiators eventually talked the pair down.

During the break-in he cut himself on the window and dropped a medication box with his name and details on.

Rahmen, 26, of Bamford Street, Oldham, was jailed for two years and six months, after pleading guilty to two counts of burglary.

Stanton, 25, of no fixed abode, was jailed for 16 months after admitting one count of burglary.
