Thieves who couldn't even drive properly made off with adventure firm's van and kit worth £10k

An outdoor adventure boss is counting the cost after night-time thieves brazenly stole his van with £10,000 of equipment inside.

The culprits were caught on his CCTV equipment trying an amazing 15 times to start the white Ford Transit custom crew cab at around 5.30am on Sunday morning.

When they did get it going they drove off in the £10,000 vehicle, but their clutch control seemed lacking as the car bounced, stop and start, down the road.

Owner Peter Savage said he didn't know how the thieves managed to get hold of his keys, which were inside the house, as there was no sign of a break-in.

But he is now desperately trying to rebuild his business at the height of summer, with several bookings lined up over the next few weeks.

He said he had been running an evening coasteering event at Rhossili, and returned to his home in Teilo Cresent, Mayhill , at around 11pm.

Up until around 4am he did some work, before going to bed about an hour-and-a-half before the break-in.

CCTV of the incident shows what appear to be young lads outside the house, wearing gloves and with hoods up. They point to the CCTV, which is all around the outside of the house.

He believes the thieves were young - possibly too young to have passed their driving test.

Now Mr Savage is desperate to be reunited with both his van - registration WV64 JSU - and its contents. He hasn't yet carried out a full inventory, but he believes there was anywhere between 30 and 50 wetsuits inside, plus buoyancy aids, helmets and some GoPro video cameras.

He has spoken to his insurance firm and the police, but is now trying to meet his obligations with bookings after losing a lot of his livelihood.

One other firm stepped in to help with a canoeing event yesterday, while Peter is hoping to cover forthcoming events with either help from other companies or by borrowing equipment.

Mr Savage, who has been running the business, Savage Adventures, singlehandedly for most of the five years it's been in operation, said: "I'm just disappointed.

"We have worked so hard, and a lot of our work is to provide for the community.

"A lot of our work is with the pupil referral unit - with kids who have been kicked out of school. We go and have fun with them and give them a better life."

He said that recently he had taken on around eight freelancers, who would also be affected by the theft.

"It's just gutting. We just tried to work hard and provide fun activities for families and people, and it can all go so quickly," he added.

The sports-mad boss has been in touch with the police and his insurance company, and is keen for anyone who sees the van to report it.

A police spokesman said they had received a report of the theft of a van from Teilo Crescent sometime in the early morning of August 18.

Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information should contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence 1900304173.
