Thieves steal televisions and cash in devastating raid at Leeds child bereavement charity

Members of a Leeds charity have said they were left "devastated" after heartless criminals smashed their way into their Beeston and stole televisions, cash and games consoles.

The Charlie's Angels Centre provides counselling sessions and practical advice to grieving parents and siblings in the terrible circumstances in which children lose their lives.

Families across Yorkshire rely on their support on a daily basis, but the charity was forced to close for two days last week after thieves smashed their way in through a window during the night of Wednesday, December 4 and stole thousands of pounds worth of equipment.

The callous thieves even ripped into charity boxes and nicked toys as they made their way from room to room.

"Why would they want to take toys?" asked Ruth Curtis, co-founder of the Charlie's Angels Centre.

"It is bad enough when someone breaks into a home, let alone a charity.

"They also took some of the raffle prizes for an event this week.

"It was just devastating. It took us a while to get our heads around it all."

The Charlie's Angels Centre provides a raft of services, from free legal advice to home visits and even play therapy to help young children come to terms with the loss of a sibling.

However, its entire team of 45 counsellors help out on a voluntary basis, so no one is paid.

Money is tight, but support from the community is already flooding in to help them overcome the setback.

'It makes you realise there are some amazing people out there'

A local business has agreed to fit an alarm system for free, while another person has donated CCTV equipment. A GoFundMe page has already seen more than £1,000 raised too.

"We have had people reaching out from all over the country to say they want to help," said Ruth.

"We've had loads of donations of toys and gifts.

"It makes you realise there are some amazing people out there."
