Police are investigating how thieves managed to steal laptops intended for Hunter health workers from an office building at Lake Macquarie on the weekend.
Unknown people entered a building on Smart Street, which connects to another building on the Pacific Highway at Charlestown, sometime between 4pm on Friday, June 12, and 8am on Monday, June 16.
Police have been told the thieves, now on the run, made off with a floor safe and electronics from the Smart Street location.
Lake Macquarie police established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident.
The Newcastle Herald understands the stolen items included laptops bound for staff working for the Hunter New England Local Health District, which has recently rolled out the single digital patient record system at hospitals.
A spokesperson for the organisation confirmed the incident had been reported to NSW Police and was under investigation.
