Thieves steal huge van filled with parcels worth £250,000 in Leeds

West Yorkshire Police leaped into action overnight to stop thieves who had hijacked a trailer in Leeds and tried to steal £250,000 worth of parcels.

The suspects attempted to drive away with a trailer in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday), which was full to the brim with parcels worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

However, officers from the force's specialist Roads Policing Unit reacted within minutes to track down the vehicle and stopped the driver in their tracks.

They also managed to recover another vehicle which was used as part of the heist.

A tweet from the WYP Roads Policing Unit account said: "A trailer full of parcels worth £250k was stolen in the early hours in Leeds.

"@WYP_RPU located the trailer and its goods within minutes and also recovered another vehicle used in the crime. Extensive enquiries on going."

The Roads Policing Unit monitor the county's roads to ensure safety and are often called upon for traffic offences. They recently stopped a driver travelling at 134mph on the A1.

However, they also assist in other police operations when required, such as last night's incident.
