Thieves steal food parcels and PPE in sick raid on Scots charity helping with coronavirus crisis

Sick thieves have stolen food parcels and kids toys for vulnerable Scots families and PPE for charity staff in a heartless raid.

Goods were being gathered at Edinburgh's Magdalene Community Centre to help out people battling through the coronavirus crisis.

But thieves struck overnight on Friday leaving a trail of devastation- with food, toys, toiletries and all the PPE for staff nicked.

Even camping equipment used by staff for making coffee was taken.

Around £1,600 worth of items were stolen.

But kind-hearted punters have put their hands in their pockets since the raid and have raised almost double that.

Charity secretary Hannah Johnston said: "At some point after nine weeks of operation, people have come along, opened up the storage tents and the shed and helped themselves to food, supplies and some of the garden toys and bikes.

"Damage and losses is currently in excess of £1,550.

"The tents are completely destroyed as they have been left open in this wind following the individuals' visit.

"This made it very difficult to take in donations and sort deliveries this week."

Gloves, masks, disinfectant spray, and hand sanitisers were all taken, along with colouring books, tampons, pasta, rice and coffee.

Thieves even took children's bikes, and shampoo, soap and razors.

However, the community rallied round and £2,000 was raised through Facebook users alone.

And another £3,000 was raised through JustGiving.

Hannah added: "We will use the money to replenish as much of the missing and damaged equipment and goods as we can.

"We have been working on it all weekend to clear up and put in place a new system of operations so we will be able to continue with all of our food delivery commitments."
