Thieves raid Glasgow school and steal £2,500 raised for charity trip to Malawi

Glasgow school pupils have been left devastated after thousands of pounds raised to fund a charity trip to Africa was stolen by thieves.

More than £2,500 was stolen from a safe in Hillpark Secondary School in Glasgow’s southside, it was discovered on Monday.

The money, which was to be put towards a senior trip to Blantyre in Malawi in June of next year, was raised at a weekend fundraising event, including a race night, tumbola and raffle.

Now, an online fundraiser has been set up to try and recover some of the stolen money.

A statement from the pupils on the fundraising page reads: "We are a group of senior pupils at Hillpark Secondary in the Southside of Glasgow.

"We have taken on this fundraising project to go to Blantyre in Malawi, in the hope that we will make a difference and better the lives of disadvantaged children by the power of education. We will be building classrooms and developing the skills of young people.

"This once in a lifetime opportunity will not only be life changing for the pupils going to help but with the community of Blantyre.

"Unfortunately last weekend the team raised over £2000 and the school was broken in to and this hard earned money was stolen.   If you are able to support our cause we would appreciate any donation however large or small."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “The young people have worked so hard to raise the valuable funds for their Malawi project and are devastated by this mindless act of vandalism and criminal activity.

“A very successful charity event was hosted by the pupils over the weekend and the money secure in the school safe.

“Anyone with any information about the break in at the school should contact the police.”

Police Scotland have said enquires are ongoing.
