Thieves pinched charity cash for homeless from popular Prestwick eatery

Cruel thieves pinched a charity tin for the homeless from a popular eatery.

Buckley’s cafe and bistro on Prestwick’s Main Street was targeted in the early hours of Thursday morning or Wednesday evening last week.

The thieves broke into the coffee shop through the back fire exit and stole a three-figure sum from the float and a Seascape charity tin.

Staff members took to social media to ask residents to keep an eye out.

A Facebook post said: “Unfortunately we were broken into last night.

“We do not keep takings on the premises therefore the perpetrator escaped with the money from the float and sadly Seascapes charity tin.

“Thanks for all the support from everyone.”

Robin Smith, Buckley’s owner, said: “They came in through the back door, took the money out the till, took the charity box and away they went.

“They weren’t after anything else, just clearly money because there was other stuff sitting.

“We were just a bit shocked. It’s not something you really expect.

“It’s a bit disappointing but the people who do it don’t really care about that.

“Some people have contacted me and said they felt there were some dodgy people kicking about.”

The cafe owner said the incident was just “one of those things”, adding: “If they catch them, they catch them.”

Loyal customers shared their disgust at the independent firm’s misfortune.

David Margaret Rowan said: “So sad and pathetic how low would people stoop.”

Marilyn Miller added: “So sorry to hear this. Soul destroying when you’re working hard to run a good business.”

A police spokesman said: “Enquiries are still ongoing to trace the person or persons responsible. “

They asked anyone with information to contact them on 101 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111.
