Thieves pinch flowers planted by volunteers to brighten up town - and then steal their replacements

House to house enquiries were carried out by police in Kidwelly after thieves stole flowers planted by volunteers to brighten up the town.

They went missing from a box and a bed at either end of Monksford Street.

Kidwelly and Mynyddygarreg in Bloom volunteers replanted them the following day - only for fate to strike twice and the flowers to disappear again.

It has left the the group in disbelief.

Kidwelly town and county councillor Jeanette Gilasbey tends the flower box near the bypass end of the street, while the bed - on the junction with Alstred Street - is maintained by other volunteers from Kidwelly and Mynyddygarreg in Bloom.

"It's a mystery to us," said Cllr Gilasbey.

"The committee are very disheartened that flowers have been stolen from the boxes on two occasions."

She added: "Some flowers have gone missing in the past from the corner of Alstred Street, assumed to be tomfoolery or minor vandalism, but these recent incidents are obviously thefts which is very upsetting to volunteers who work tirelessly to keep Kidwelly in bloom."

The mayor of Kidwelly, Cllr Dena Lloyd-Waterford, said she was disappointed about what had happened on June 14 and June 15, especially given the wider situation.

"Even through the lockdown we're showing that we're willing to put in work to make the town look nice," she said.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said it had been made aware of the thefts.

"Patrols and house to house enquiries have been conducted, but due to no further leads the investigation has been closed," she said.

"Anyone with information or footage of the area is of course asked to contact us."

If you can help, phone Dyfed Powys Police on 101.
