Thieves dab substance to knock victim out

LAMPANG: Two members of a gang were being hunted for allegedly drugging an elderly woman unconscious before ransacking her house in Thoen district and making off with 75,000 baht in cash and gold ornaments.

Local police on Tuesday went to the house in tambon Mae Wa after being alerted about a substance-using theft gang.

Mrs Yodkaew Suyalang, 85, who fell victim to the gang, told police that she was alone in the house on Monday morning after her children went to work in their paddy field.  As she was sitting in the basement of her house, two women came and started talking to her in a friendly manner.

The pair talked about several issues and then asked her for something to eat, said the elderly woman.

They then touched her and she later fell unconscious. The two women subsequently ransacked rooms inside the house before making off with 75,000 baht in cash and 10-baht weight of gold ornaments, she said.

When her children returned home at around 6pm, they found their grandmother unconscious in the basement of the house. They immediately came to her rescue.

They later found their rooms were ransacked and valuables vanished and immediately alerted police.

The officers interrogated the woman showed images of two suspects who preyed on victims in other provinces by using a substance on their bodies.

After seeing the images, Mrs Yodkaew told police the two suspects were the ones who came to her house.

The police and local leaders have asked local residents to keep a watchful eye on strangers coming to their villages and to take extra caution.
