Thieves cutting through metal railings to steal bikes from Glasgow tenement closes

Glaswegians living in tenements are being warned to keep their closes secure after two bikes were stolen from common closes in Partick in the past few days.

The thieves cut through metal railings in the closes to steal the bikes on both occasions.

Website Stolen Bikes UK report that at least 30 bikes have been stolen in Glasgow since November.

Police are advising people to keep their bikes in their flats if possible and if not to secure them firmly with more than one lock.

Glasgow North West Police tweeted: "In the last few days two bikes stolen from common closes in Partick after the railing was cut to release the bike.

"Keep your close secure; know who you are 'buzzing in' and if possible keep your bike in your flat, but if not, secure firmly using more than one rail/lock."

The warning comes after Glasgow City Council confirmed plans to install bike shelters on 60 streets in a bid to break down barriers to active travel and prevent bike thefts from common closes.

The scheme, being introduced as a three-year pilot, is set to begin at some point this year.
