Thieves cause ‘small explosion’ as they try to steal cash from supermarket ATM

Thieves caused a 'small explosion' as they tried to steal cash from an ATM at a Whalley Range supermarket.

Officers were called to reports of a robbery at the Co-op Food store on Withington Road at around 11.30pm on Wednesday (July 15).

Police say three offenders caused an explosion in a bid to remove the machine.

They were unable to steal any money and left empty handed.

A GMP spokesperon said: “Three offenders attempted to remove the cash machine at the premises by creating a small explosion.

“No money was stolen. There were no reports of injuries.”

A Co-op spokesperson confirmed the store would remain closed on Thursday but would reopen on Friday for business.

“There was an incident at our Withington Road, Whalley Range store late last night (July 15) while the store was closed for the evening," the Co-op spokesperson said.

"Three intruders entered the store and carried out an unsuccessful attack on the community’s ATM - there are a number of security measures designed into ATM’s to prevent attack and the would-be thieves were thwarted.

"We appeal for anyone who may have seen, or heard anything, to come forward to Police who are investigating so that the criminals can be caught and stopped.

"The store is expected to re-open tomorrow (July 17) to serve the community.”

Greater Manchester Police said their enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Anyone with further information can call GMP on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
