Thieves blow up a cash machine after breaking into supermarket through roof

A cash machine was blown up by thieves after they broke into a supermarket through the roof.

Police were called to Aldi in Hyde just before midnight on Saturday night after the store's alarm went off.

It is understood the crooks caused an explosion to get into the ATM, which is inside the shop.

The gang had fled by the time officers arrived, and at this stage it is unclear if any cash was stolen.

GMP confirmed an investigation was underway and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Tameside inspector Lee Broadstock said: "There was an alarm activation that came into us just before midnight on Saturday night.

"On patrol's arrival, the offenders had left.

"It would appear the offenders have gained access to the building via the roof/ceiling and then have gained access to the ATM.

"The ATM was located inside the store and they have caused an explosion to gain access to the machine.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111 .
