Thieves attempt ATM theft during convenience store raid

Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a break-in at a convenience store in Calderbank.

The incident happened around 2am this morning at the Day Today store on the village's Main Street. Police say it is linked to a similar raid in Cambuslang that occurred yesterday.

Three unidentified men forced entry to the shop by damaging the external metal shutters and the entrance door.

Damage was caused to an internal door where they unsuccessfully attempted to force entry to an ATM. The trio subsequently fled the scene in a blue Audi estate car, heading in the direction of Chapelhall and the M8.

One of the raiders is described as being of stocky build and wearing a dark hooded top with white patches on the shoulders, dark jogging bottoms with white stripes on the sides, dark trainers and a dark face mask.

The second is of average build and wearing a dark hooded top with a light coloured emblem on the left of the chest. He was also wearing dark jogging bottoms with a light emblem on the left thigh, trainers and gloves.

The third man was of average build, wearing a dark coloured hooded top and dark coloured jogging bottoms and dark trainers.

Detective Sergeant Mark Nelson of Coatbridge police office said: "Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we would urge anyone with information to come forward.

"We would urge anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around the shop or the wider area overnight to get in touch. We also be keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the blue Audi car or knows of its whereabouts.

"An investigation is also ongoing into a similar break-in at a shop on Woodland Crescent in Cambuslang on Thursday and we are treating these incidents as linked.

"Anyone with information about this incident in Calderbank can call 101, quoting incident 0221 of 23 April, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
