Thieves are going around stealing catalytic converters - and they're targeting Hondas and Toyotas

Catalytic converter thieves are on the prowl - and they're targeting Hondas and Toyotas.

A warning to motorists was shared on social media by police this week.

Crooks have reportedly been operating in the Tameside area, however it is understood there have also been thefts elsewhere in Greater Manchester.

Catalytic converters are fitted to the exhaust system of vehicles and are often targeted by thieves because of the precious metals they contain - such as platinum, palladium and rhodium.

According to the AA, taller vehicles like 4x4s are particularly vulnerable to crooks as the converters are more accessible.

They also tend to have bigger engines, and therefore contain more of the precious metals too.

GMP Tameside North shared a warning on it's Facebook page: "Criminal have been targeting vehicles which include a catalytic converter and stealing them as they can be easily sold.

"The vehicles that are preferred are Honda and Toyotas.

"Should you be a victim please report to the police, using 101 and ensure that your vehicle is secure when not with it."

Anyone with information relating to the thefts is urged to contact GMP or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
