Thierry Henry's suspicion about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Arsenal is coming true

Arsenal's struggles continued against Wolves, as Mikel Arteta's side slumped to their third consecutive home league defeat.

Goals from Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto sealed a 2-1 win for the visitors on Sunday evening, making it Arsenal's worst ever start to a league season.

The Gunners' inability to carve out clear cut chances in attack was again evident, despite Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being fielded through the middle as many supporters have called for in recent months.

The Gabonese forward missed a glorious late chance to equalise, heading wide after a good cross from Hector Bellerin.

His blank against Wolves means the Arsenal skipper is still yet to open his account at the Emirates this season, and sits on two goals for the campaign - one from the penalty spot against Manchester United.

There was mass celebration from Arsenal fans in the summer when Aubameyang penned a big-money three-year deal after months of speculation surrounding his future.

Last season, he was the spearhead for Arsenal's revival under Arteta, scoring in both the semi-final and final of their FA Cup triumph.

Having signed his new deal, Aubameyang got his season off to a dream start with a goal in their rampant 4-0 win over Fulham on the opening day.

But he has found the net just once in nine Premier League outings since with the Gunners registering their worst start to a top flight season in terms of goals since 1998/99.

With Aubameyang struggling in front of goal, Arsenal's entire output in attack has suffered tremendously - something club legend Thierry Henry, their record goalscorer, has been warning about for some time.

When his former team-mate, Freddie Ljungberg, took caretaker charge after the sacking of Unai Emery, shortly before Mikel Arteta’s appointment, Aubameyang saved his side to salvage a 2-2 draw against Norwich.

After the game, Henry said: “Aubameyang scored two goals and we escaped.

"But that's what I saw, you know, without the goals of Aubameyang I don't know where we would have been right now.”

When Aubameyang’s future was up in the air, it was a point reiterated by Henry, despite his refusal to tell the attacker he should stay.

Henry told Sky Sports: “All I know is that we are definitely going to miss his goals if he does leave.

"He does score goals and if you take the goals of Aubameyang away, it’s a tough one.”

Speaking after the Wolves defeat, Arteta refused to make any excuses for his side's performance.

"It's a really bad result," Arteta told Sky Sports. "We had our moments. We had a great reaction in the second half. The team showed desire but the goal didn't arrive. There are no excuses, we have to improve."

Speaking to BBC Sport, Arteta added: "They had two shots on target in the first half and scored twice. The team showed a real resilience, togetherness and belief to try to win in the second half. We generated the chances but didn't score.

"We need more goals to win football matches. We need to keep supporting the players. All players go through [tough] periods. We're creating chances but struggling to score goals. That's the difference between winning and losing.

"When you lose matches the confidence goes down because they believe things can happen again. You need to win after a defeat. We've been doing this in my time here. This is the first time since we've been here [that they've had a losing run]."
