Thierry Henry's comments on Anthony Martial are being proved spot on by Bruno Fernandes impact

Anthony Martial put in yet another impressive performance for Manchester United against Southampton on Monday night despite his side's disappointing 2-2 draw.

The French forward was involved in both United's goals, first finding Marcus Rashford with a clever pass to give the England international the chance to open the scoring before netting himself with a wonderful solo effort.

The display was further evidence that Martial has truly turned a corner, and the 24-year-old looks to be finally living up to his clearly massive potential.

So what has caused his sudden upturn in form?

Well, judging by past comments from fellow French striker Thierry Henry it may well be thanks to the arrival of Bruno Fernandes.

Earlier this year, in an interview with the Arsenal podcast Handbrake Off , Henry's former teammate Lee Dixon revealed that Henry believed Martial was suffering from not having many leaders around him.

He is known to be a shy, quiet figure, and Henry felt he needed more loud, imposing teammates to bring the best out of him, comparing Martial's situation to the one when he first arrived in England.

Recalling a conversation he had with Henry about Martial, Dixon recounted: "He said, 'He’s exactly like I was when I came to Arsenal. He needs to go through the process like I did with you lot and I don’t know if the Manchester United dressing room is like that'. He said that was the making of him.

"I’m not saying he would have been as good as Thierry – but would have been similar if he had been in the old United dressing room with the characters like what we had in our dressing room. He certainly talks about that as a real learning lesson in his curve to get how brilliant he was."

Many figures in the United team have waxed lyrical about the leadership qualities Fernandes has shown since joining in January, and Martial's form appears to have a direct positive correlation with the signing of the Portuguese playmaker, possibly proving Henry right.

Martial had scored just once in the five matches before Fernandes' debut against Wolves on February 1, and looked on course for another decent but not superb return for the season.

Since then, however, there has been no stopping him, and in the Premier League he has scored eight times and created two assists since January, with his ten contributions to goals second only to Fernandes himself in the division since he signed (Fernandes has scored seven and created seven assists, giving him a total of 14 contributions).

So is having such a positive role model in Fernandes around the reason why Martial has suddenly sprung into life?

It remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure - if he carries on this recent form on a consistent basis, the comparisons with Henry will only grow stronger and stronger.
