Thierry Henry's Celtic 'respect' comment as French legend hints at application for Parkhead job

Thierry Henry has refused to rule himself out of the running for the Celtic job as the French legend admitted he “respected” the Parkhead club.

The 43-year-old is out of work after leaving MLS side CF Montreal in February for ‘family reasons’ and has previously taken charge of Ligue 1 giants Monaco.

John Kennedy remains manager on an interim basis as the search for Neil Lennon’s permanent replacement continues.

The Northern Irishman stood down in February following defeat to Ross County, leaving the Hoops far adrift of Old Firm rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

A variety of names have been linked with the role, including the likes of Roy Keane, Eddie Howe and Enzo Maresca.

But Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond revealed incoming chief executive Dominic McKay would have a say in the recruitment of a new boss, with the former Scottish Rugby chief only waving goodbye to Murrayfield upon the conclusion of Scotland’s Six Nations campaign on Friday.

Henry has never been mentioned among the various runners and riders for the job, but was coy when asked whether he would be interested in the position on the Robbie Fowler podcast.

The French football icon, who lifted the World Cup in 1998, comes with a mixed track record having struggled at Monaco, though he did lead Montreal to their first play-off appearance in four seasons last year across the Atlantic.

He also served as assistant to Roberto Marinez in the Belgium setup, where he worked alongside former Celtic midfielder Shaun Maloney, and refused to fully reject the possibility of stepping in to the Parkhead hotseat.

“With all humility, whatever is going to come my way – I’m not saying that should come my way," he said.

“Whatever is going to come my way I’m going to try to evaluate. I’m sure they’re going to work on what they’re going to work on.

“I don’t know what’s happening there, this is a club I respect a lot, but that I don’t know about.”
