Thierry Henry quits as Montreal manager due to family reasons and is returning to London

Thierry Henry is stepping down as manager of CF Montreal and has cited 'family reasons' for his decision.

The 43-year-old Arsenal legend had been in charge of the MLS club since November 2019, and in total oversaw 29 games as head coach.

However, he released a statement on Thursday explaining his decision to resign from his post.

"It is with a heavy heart that I’m writing this message," he said.

"The last year has been an extremely difficult one for me personally. Due to the worldwide pandemic, I was unable to see my children.

"Unfortunately due to the ongoing restrictions and the fact that we will have to relocate to the US again for several months (at least) will be no different.

"The separation is too big of a strain for me and my kids. Therefore it is with much sadness that I must take the decision to return to London and leave CF Montreal."

He also added: "We had an impossible year together and to make the playoffs with this group of people is an experience that I will never forget.

"Thank you all for being there on this journey and I wish you all the success for the future.”

It brings to an end Henry's second spell as a manager, after he had a short time in charge of Monaco between October 2018-January 2019.

He was recently linked with a position at Bournemouth but Jonathan Woodgate has instead been appointed until the end of the season.

Recently Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock admitted he was disappointed he would not be lining up against Henry in the dugout in the Championship.

In quotes reported by the Hartlepool Mail, the 72-year-old said: "Personally, I wish Thierry Henry had taken over if I’m honest.

"I’m not being disrespectful to Jonathan, but I was hoping they were going to appoint Thierry Henry.

"I thought, wow, he’ll wonder what’s hit him coming to the Championship."
