Thierry Henry pays heartbreaking tribute to Sergio Aguero after tragic retirement

Thierry Henry has paid tribute to Sergio Aguero after the former Manchester City striker was forced to call time on his trophy-laden career.

Aguero announced his retirement from football earlier this month following a heart scare while playing for Barcelona in October.

The 33-year-old striker joined Barca from Man City in the summer, but only made five appearances for his new club.

During 10 years with City he scored 260 goals in 390 games to become the club’s record goal scorer, winning five Premier League titles, as well the FA Cup and six League Cups.

Aguero scored 184 goals in 275 Premier League appearances to finish his career as the league’s fourth-highest scorer.

Henry managed 175 goals in 258 appearances himself and is in no doubt about Aguero’s place in the division’s history books.

“First and foremost, I didn’t have time to pay tribute to the big man and I think we have seen one of the best strikers ever in the history of this league,” he said on Amazon Prime.

“To see him go the way he went, stopping the game that he loved the most and what he likes to do the most, scoring goals, without having the chance anymore to be able to do that for the reason we know.

“Obviously, health is the most important thing.”

Aguero was a prolific goal-getter for Man City over 10 years, overtaking Eric Brook’s record which had stood for 78 years as the club’s highest ever goal scorer in 2017.

The Argentine netted the most famous goal in City’s history to win the 2012/13 Premier League title, but Henry says there is much more to him than just his staggering numbers.

“It’s not only the goals, it’s how he scored them,” the Frenchman added.

“The passion that he had. The relationship he had with the City fans and I think everyone in this country will always, always remember Sergio Aguero.

“And I’m in that because I love football, the way he used to score goals and how he went about it.

“I was so sad to see him leave the game the way he left so all the very best with his life and for his family.

“But, as I said, health is very important and we tend to forget about that. What a player he was.”

Aguero was tearful when he announced his retirement from the game during a press conference on December 15.

“The decision I have made, I have taken it for my health, because of the problem I had a month and a half ago,” he said.

"I was in the hands of the medical staff and they told me the best thing would be to stop playing. So 10 days ago I made that decision, I want to tell everyone I did everything possible to have some hope but there wasn't much.

"I am very proud of the career I have had, I have always dreamt of playing football.”
