Thierry Henry named new Montreal Impact head coach as Arsenal legend returns to management

Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry has sealed his return to management, taking over MLS club Montreal Impact on a two-year deal.

Henry had been out of work since a disastrous spell with AS Monaco saw him relieved of his duties after just 20 matches in charge in January.

But after taking some time out of coaching, the former Belgium assistant manager - who netted over 200 times for Arsenal in his eight years there as a player - has taken over the reins at the Canadian-based side.

The news comes just days after the conclusion of the MLS season and sees Henry return to MLS for the first time since hanging up his boots while playing for New York Red Bulls in 2015.

"It's an honor to become head coach of the Montreal Impact and return to MLS," the 42-year-old said via Impact's website .

"It's a league that I know well where I had a great time.

"Being in Quebec, in Montreal, which has a huge multicultural heritage, is something extraordinary. I have always had an eye on this club and now I am there. "

Impact will be hoping Henry's tenure can bring about an upturn in their fortunes after finishing ninth in the Eastern conference last season.

For Henry, meanwhile, it's all about rebuilding his reputation, after a promising coaching career was stunted by that lacklustre spell in France.

He left the former Ligue 1 champions in serious danger of relegation and down and out in the Champions League back in January, only to be replaced by Leonardo Jardim less than six months after the Portuguese boss had been sacked.

His contract in Montreal takes him through until at least 2021, with the option for a further year.
