Thierry Henry had warned Manchester United what they had to do to keep Anthony Martial happy

Manchester United have missed the opportunity to get the most out of Anthony Martial, according to Thierry Henry.

Lee Dixon has revealed how the legendary Premier League striker previously likened the 26-year-old to himself when he arrived in the English top flight six years ago.

Arsenal are among the clubs reportedly linked with the Frenchman, who is currently recovering from a knee injury, as he looks for a move away from Old Trafford.

Martial has only mustered four starts in the Premier League this season, seven appearances in total, with just one goal to his tally, having fallen down the pecking order.

The former Gunners defender speaking on the Handbrake Off Podcast spoke about how Henry had already told the Reds how to mould the attacker and reap the rewards of his talent.

"I presumed Henry knew Martial because they’re from the same area in France so I asked him about Martial," Dixon explained.

"I said, ‘What he’s like?’ and he looked at me with that look that he does as if to say: ‘Have I not already spoken to you about this?’

“And he said, ‘He’s exactly like I was when I came to Arsenal, he needs to go through the process like I did with you lot and I don’t know if the Manchester United dressing room is like that.'

“He said that was the making of him.

“To liken himself to Martial or another player to him, it really painted a picture of what Martial was like and what his character was like because he’s super-talented like Thierry was and I think his development would have been similar."
